Should Bloggers Write Paid Posts?

Written by Troy on 03/12/08 Filed under: Making Money, Your Advice?

I’m feeling a little under the weather today, so this post is an open-mike opportunity to share your thoughts. Here’s the situation as I see it:

Paid posts are good because:

  • They offer new bloggers an easier way to make money
  • They are easy to sign up for, and have few special requirements
  • They provide ideas for new content

Paid posts are bad because:

  • Paid links can destroy your Google PageRank
  • Writing irrelevant posts will turn your readers away
  • They distract you from the mission of your blog
  • They remove the motivation to develop advertising revenue, which leads to greater returns later on

I personally don’t think it would be good to write paid posts for this blog, but I welcome your input in the comments section.

Brian has written a very clear and insightful response to this question on his blog, 3xw.us Hosting & Design. You can read it here.

I dont see why not, as long as we stay true to our concept and write about interesting subjects, what does it really matter whether we get paid or not?

You might be right...my main complaint wit them is that early on, they're so much easier to make money with than ads that the blogger doesn't focus on working on their ad revenue.

Down the road, that revenue would be greater than the money from PayPerPost, but it requires a lot of conscientious effort to develop the right kind of visitor count. It takes too much time to really focus on both.

I think if you're going to write about a product, you might as well have a go at earning a bit of money for doing so.

You bring up a good point...and for some blog types it is right on. I once stumbled upon a post about niches that are great for making money, and although I've unfortunately lost the link, one of them was product fanblogs. For the iphone blog, for example, paid posts are a great revenue source and a very appropriate way to add content. For this blog, though, I haven't found a good free service yet that pays you to post. If I do, though, I promise to let you all know that there's compensation behind it.

I believe if you're going to be paid to write something, you better be writing about something that matters to you otherwise it's just not worthwhile to you or your readers.

BTW, you may want to correct the typo in the title of this post.

Thank you for catching that. I thought I had fixed it, but my internet connection was acting quirky at the time :).

I agree with Byteact. As you posted, an irrelevant subject will turn your readers away; and, if you don't care about the subject, you'll probably write a lesser post about it.
